HOW THE BRAIN WORKS—AND WHY IT SOMETIMES FORGETS!

There are three main areas of the brain—the hindbrain, midbrain, and forebrain (see figure 6.1). The hindbrain and midbrain contain structures that process body functions like heart rate, breathing, balance, coordination, muscle movement, and some sensory information. These types of functions are considered “lower” brain functions because they’re automatic—that is, we don’t have to think about doing them. The forebrain processes both lower brain functions like hunger, thirst, and sensory information, and “higher” brain functions such as memory, logic, conscious thought, vision, hearing, and language. Included in the forebrain is the limbic system, a network of structures that process emotion. I first defined the thinking brain (neocortex) and emotional brain (limbic) in chapter 1, page 9.

The secret to success in the Anti-Alzheimer’s Prescription is maintaining the thinking brain’s control over the emotional brain. It is like keeping the superego in control of the id. Scientists have found that different areas of

The forebrain includes the neocortex, or thinking brain, and the limbic system, or emotional brain. The midbrain and hindbrain control automatic functions such as breathing, balance, coordination, and heart rate.
